Assessment

Through continuous assessment we aim to build a complete picture of a child’s development; not only academic, but also emotional, social and physical. Assessment information enables us to plan the next steps a child needs to take in the learning process and to set learning goals.

Assessment takes many forms. We assess children through discussion and close observation of them at work, as well as through more formal testing procedures. Children’s progress in National Curriculum subjects is assessed with the aid of optional  assessment tests in reading, writing, spelling, mental and written maths.

National testing arrangements mean that all children are formally assessed, by a combination of teacher assessment and SATs tests, in English and Maths, towards the end of Year 2 and Year 6. There is also a national assessment profile for children in their Reception year.

Expectation of achievement in the New National Curriculum is now more rigorous and many learning objectives have now been put into lower year groups, particularly in maths and English.

End of Year expectations for each year group are available to download.
