Assemblies

Each week, we use Picture News to explore relevant topics and events from around the world. These discussions encourage pupils to form their own views and to think carefully about the world around them. They also support pupils in developing an understanding of:

  • British Values: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
  • Protected characteristics: the characteristics protected under the Equality Act 2010, and why every person deserves fair treatment and respect.
  • The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: the rights every child has, and how these apply to their own lives and to children around the world.

Whatever the topic, we always bring the discussion back to our school community and our 6Rs: respect, responsibility, resilience, reflectiveness, reciprocity and resourcefulness. We want pupils to see how these values guide the way they treat one another and how they can contribute positively to their school and wider community.

Topics covered so far can be found in the coverage document on this page.

How you can support at home

Picture News can prompt meaningful conversations at home. You may find it helpful to ask your child:

  • What did you discuss in assembly this week?
  • What do you think about it?
  • How do our school values connect to what you learned?"
